Soul and funk records
Soul and funk grew out of American gospel and rhythm and blues in the 1960s, on labels like Motown, Stax and Atlantic, and gave us Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, then the funk of Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire. Britain took the music to heart: northern soul all-nighters at places like Wigan Casino kept rare American records in demand for decades, and London produced Sade and Amy Winehouse. Jumbo Records in Leeds started out in 1971 selling the reggae and soul its founder played as a DJ, and Flashback's Shoreditch shop has a basement given over to soul, jazz and reggae.
